Split Bill Calculator

Enter what each person paid. We'll tell you who pays whom — in the fewest transfers possible.

How to use it

  1. 1Add everyone who's splitting (including people who paid nothing).
  2. 2Next to each name, enter what they paid up front; leave 0 if they didn't pay.
  3. 3The answer appears instantly: who pays whom, and how much.

Why you shouldn't settle bills pair by pair

After a group dinner or a weekend trip, "who owes whom" turns into a fog fast — you covered the tickets, someone else got dinner. Settling every pair separately is not just tedious; with five people it can take up to ten transfers.

The right way: split the total evenly, work out how much each person over- or under-paid, then have under-payers send the difference straight to over-payers. That settles n people in at most n−1 transfers. This calculator does exactly that, computing in cents so even amounts that don't divide evenly come out exact.

FAQ

Is this split bill calculator free?

Completely free, no sign-up, no download. Everything runs in your browser — names and amounts are never uploaded anywhere.

What if the total doesn't divide evenly?

It computes in cents: $100 split three ways becomes 33.34, 33.33, 33.33 — the sum is exact to the cent, and the same input always gives the same answer.

Why does it need so few transfers?

Instead of having every pair pay each other back, it computes each person's net balance and matches the biggest debtor with the biggest creditor. n people settle in at most n−1 transfers.

What about trips with multiple currencies?

That's beyond a little web tool — the Minimal Expense app's travel ledger locks the exchange rate as you log, splits by ratio or by person, and produces a settlement report when you're home.
