Why splitting the total evenly gets it wrong
You covered the tickets, someone else got dinner, and one friend skipped that meal. By the time everyone's home, nobody remembers who paid for what.
Dividing the total by heads is the quickest way — and the easiest way for someone to quietly lose out. Log each expense with who paid and who was actually there, and the numbers feel fair to everyone.

FAQ
Is this split bill calculator free?
Completely free, no sign-up, no download. Everything runs in your browser — names and amounts are never uploaded anywhere.
Someone skipped one meal. Can I leave them out of it?
Yes. Every expense has its own participant list, so just untick whoever wasn't there. That expense won't touch their balance, while the rest still counts. A one-pot calculator can't do this.
Does everything have to be split equally?
No. Besides equal, there's weighted and exact: weighted gives each person a number and the bigger number pays more; exact lets you type what each person owes. These are the same three modes you get inside the Minimal Expense app.
What if the amount doesn't divide evenly?
It computes in the currency's smallest unit — currencies without minor units round to whole numbers, everything else to two decimals. The leftover lands on whoever paid, the total is exact, and the same input always gives the same answer.
Why does it need so few transfers?
Instead of having every pair pay each other back, it computes each person's net balance and matches the biggest debtor with the biggest creditor. n people settle in at most n−1 transfers.
What about trips with multiple currencies?
This calculator handles one currency at a time. For a trip with yen and dollars in the same week, use the Minimal Expense travel ledger — it locks the exchange rate as you log, produces the settlement report when you're home, and remembers what's already been paid back.
